Pitching a trade idea during internship

Hey guys,

Because I am about to start an internship with no formal experience doing stock pitches (I am not a finance major),

I wanted to know what pitching a trade idea looks like for interns.

Are you actually giving a presentation with a memorized script or should the pitch be informal and more conversation-like?

Thanks in advance.

I've given a few.EQD Pitch: Short PPT | Had to give a pitch every week and shoot ideas here and there. Brief 5 min pitch with emphasis on talkingRel Val CLO: Long PPT | Rotation project, expect 10-20min + lots of talking/questionsHigh Yield Credit: One Pager with Semi long brief | Short pitch going over main points/thesis with more emphasis on talking/questionsSingle stock: S&T - One pager, ER: Full PPT/In depth imitation report | For S&T very brief, main focus was on the trading side of it, For ER extensive presentation, pull out all the stopsDepending on asset class and context it'll vary. Most of the time the intern coordinator will specify the requirements and format.

Have also given pitches at a SM HF, PM liked informal pitches. Just walked over to the desk and shot ideas at him. Main thesis and some interesting points, go in depth later if necessary.

Absolutely.

Some helpful tips:

  • Read as many Value Investors Club ideas.
  • Find old pitches from the Columbia Business School yearly stock competition
  • Find a random company, do the analysis, create a small one pager or outline, pitch to someone
