Possible to make transition from commodities broker, to the trading side?
31 years old, been brokering commodities (ppr) for 9 years. Not really into the “brokering” side any more.
Curious what the easiest transition would be, if at all, to the trading side.
Thanks

I would say prob less than 25%.... if you do nat gas options... maybe a market making firm would have interest.... if front of the curve power, maybe a prop shop..... in most other products i would not think you have a legit shot to make a move.
you could get non trading roles with a little work.. i seen plenty move into risk and ops roles
out of the hundred or so traders i've come across in my years i've heard of 2 that went from brokering to trading
Their brokering experience was limited to straight out of college so than 1 year brokering then made the transition to trading
i know 1 person who did it. they were a nat gas broker for ~2 years but they moved into an analyst position for a few years then was promoted internally to trade
I know 3 in a 16 year career
crude trader
gasoline trader
nat gas trader
So your tellin me theres a chance!
Is it possible to go the opposite way ?
Trading -> brokering
Very much possible, currently interning at an inter-dealer broker firm- many of the brokers at my firms were traders early in their careers and then moved over to the brokerage side because they knew many traders and were able to build a client base. Probably much harder to be a long time broker and then move to the trading side
