Prop. Trading Internship

I searched for it on here and didn't really see anything.

What all do PT interns do? Daily tasks etc...

Also, I dont see a lot of structured internship programs in PT shops, is there a reason, or do they only hire when they /need/ interns? I just dont see a lot of ways to obtain one other than cold calling/emailing, yes I do know some like Jane Street offer some online/OCR stuff but for the most part I dont see a lot.

Can any of you guys speak about shops in Texas (Dallas, Houston, Austin)?

Best,
H

Admittedly no clue about TX or NY, but in Chicago, most PT shops recruit the interns via internal networking (already know someone personally on the team) or recruiting from 3-5 mainly midwest feeder schools (that the partners attended). Here in Chicago, I can only think of 7 privately held trading firms that have an regular internship program, post seasonal intern announcements, or recruit for summer interns at the undergrad level. The rest are somewhat unstructured and unannounced. I invite someone to blast me out of the water if they have evidence to the contrary, but in my humble experience, this describes the majority of entry level/summer intern recruitment at non-bank trading groups.

The major factors for successful placement seem driven by school/degree, the trading needs of the firm (timing) and useful skills (whatever programming language/software you know in relation to what the desk uses). For a formal internship program, I would imagine that applicants are considered along these key factors.

Consider posting this in the energy trading or proprietary trading groups. I'd be interested in what others have to say.

Nothing wrong with trying the cold call/email approach. Worse case it gets ignored. A lot of people will not reply to a linkedin, but I'm sure some will (maybe 1 out of 50). If you have email addresses, that's good too because you can get your resume to someone a step beyond the hr person.

Touching on what econometricks said, the ORC would be a good place to start. If you go to a midwest engineering school, a lot of the significant prop firms recruit at these schools for summer interns. Also check with career office to see if any alumni work at firms you are targeting and try to make a connection via that route.

I once heard of a kid who got onto the trading floor as a guest and put his resume on every desk (over 15 firms/prospects) and got 2 interviews. This was back when there were a lot of people working down there and he got hired somewhere as a clerk.
