Quantitative/Algorithmic Trading Analyst

Can anyone shed some light on what a career as a trading analyst would look like? And what are the exit opps? Not an analyst (level) in trading, but someone who does the analytics for the desk. Mostly building and enhancing the electronic trading platform and track the desk’s performance and other metrics. (Something like this job role: https://search.jobs.barclays/job/new-york/sm-and-…)

Is it possible to switch over to being a trader or a quant at a BB or HF?
