Question about the markets

Watching bloomberg and CNBC has given me the impression that there is a 'herd effect' that takes place in the markets which means it can be profitable to follow an upwards trend if you spot one earlier enough and get off at the right time...but what about anticipating a development or potential money making trade idea before others have....is that considered pure speculation?
