Rates Trading Interview

I have an upcoming interview for Rates Trading Summer Associate. Can anyone shed lights on what kind of technicals should I prepare before the interview?

I'm sure it will be bit more technical than the Summer Analyst interview.

Any input would be welcome. Thanks

For a Rates Trading Summer Associate interview, the technical preparation will indeed be more advanced than for a Summer Analyst role. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are the key areas you should focus on:

  1. Market Awareness:

    • Develop a strong understanding of current market trends, especially in fixed income and interest rates.
    • Be prepared to discuss macroeconomic factors like central bank policies, inflation, GDP growth, and their impact on rates markets.
    • Establish a routine of following key news sources like WSJ, FT, or Finviz.com to stay updated.
  2. Product Knowledge:

    • Familiarize yourself with fixed income products such as bonds, swaps, futures, and options.
    • Understand how these instruments are priced and traded, and their role in managing interest rate risk.
  3. Quantitative Skills:

    • Brush up on mental math and quick calculations, as these are often tested in trading interviews.
    • Be ready for brainteasers or math-related questions, which are common in Sales & Trading interviews. Resources like Heard on the Street can be invaluable for this.
  4. Valuation and Pricing:

    • Know how to value bonds, calculate yields, and understand concepts like duration and convexity.
    • Be prepared to explain how interest rate changes affect bond prices and portfolio valuations.
  5. Scenario Analysis:

    • Be ready to discuss how you would react to different market scenarios, such as a sudden rate hike or a flattening yield curve.
    • Demonstrate your ability to think on your feet and make quick, informed decisions.
  6. Behavioral and Fit Questions:

    • While technicals are crucial, don’t overlook fit questions. Show that you have a "trader mindset" by highlighting your ability to manage risk, think quickly, and stay calm under pressure.
  7. Practical Experience:

    • If you’ve traded or invested personally, be prepared to discuss your strategies, the rationale behind your decisions, and the outcomes.

Lastly, practice is key. Mock interviews, reviewing technical guides, and solving practice problems will help you refine your skills and boost your confidence. Good luck!
