Rates/Agency MBS

Curious how good different banks in NYC are for these two classes. Seems like the people at Citi are super sharp, and a bunch have shot up the ladder (10 years to MD). Seems like swaps and pass-through businesses are especially strong. Lots of good exits to CitSec, Brevan, other buyside roles.

JPM seemed like they were okay. A couple of good people, but it seems like they have very low turnover so it's hard to move up (nobody makes MD in 12 years).

How about the pass-through business at MS? Have heard it is very very solid. Have heard very little about Goldman/BAML/Barc.

Which bank has the best opportunity for learning/becoming a good trader? Could be based on heavy flow or risk-taking culture.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown of the NYC banks for Rates/Agency MBS:

  1. Citi: Known for having sharp talent, especially in swaps and pass-through businesses. Citi's team has a strong reputation, and many professionals have climbed the ranks quickly (e.g., reaching MD in under 10 years). Additionally, there are solid exit opportunities to CitSec, Brevan, and other buyside roles.

  2. JPM: While JPM has a decent reputation, it seems to have lower turnover, which can make upward mobility slower (e.g., MD promotions taking over 12 years). The talent pool is good, but it doesn't appear to have the same dynamism as Citi in this space.

  3. Morgan Stanley (MS): The pass-through business at MS is described as very strong. While specific details on Rates/Agency MBS aren't as widely discussed, MS seems to hold a solid position in this area.

  4. Goldman Sachs (GS), Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML), and Barclays (Barc): There isn't much detailed information available about their performance in Rates/Agency MBS from the context provided. However, these banks are generally competitive players in fixed income markets, so they likely have a presence, albeit less highlighted compared to Citi or MS.

If you're considering a career in this space, Citi and MS seem to stand out for their strengths in pass-throughs and swaps, as well as career progression opportunities.
