repo desks are treading desks...so with good P&L prop trading, you can go trade repo at a hedge fund....thats pretty much it
Isn't there a lot going on in repo even though it doesn't lead to the lucrative PM roles at hedge funds? Afaik, repo traders are financing PM's positions when they are at hedge funds so it isn't really a risk taking role there anyway either (am I wrong?). I know there is a lot going on in the funding markets like transition to SOFR and that skill set is useful if you want to be on the funding/balance sheet management team of any financial institution. I think that there are repo traders within prime brokerage too.
