S&T and IB

Question

So i plan on starting WSO academy for the IB 12 week course. From that would i be able to apply to S&T and IB roles and be competitive for both?

SnT is a little different. The sales side, probably would actually be pretty similar in terms of personality and client facing, but the trading side is rather different in a lot of ways. I would always say the personalities of trading and IB are very different. Traders are risk takers, bankers are often some of the most risk averse people I know.

In terms of junior job headcount it has always been minimal for 10 years and this will always be the case.

Electrified. -> been hearing this as well from 10 years and most desks are already electrified. But so what? it's just that the technical skills needed for those desks are different, it's not about automation taking over jobs. Obviously we might have experienced big change after GFC, but I haven't experienced that era so can't comment on that.

Junior jobs: Yes, this is the case and will continue to be the case FOR TRADERS. We still need modelers and sales people at all levels. If you can model, you can get work.

some desks getting almost completely electrified: The desks that have been fully automated are the easy ones. Automating options is a lot harder. Too many risk factors.

AI advancing more and more: I'm skeptical on this simply because we already have predictive models across the board. LLMs are not good at trading.

Late response here, but I would say maybe. A lot of prop shops have more "mixed" roles these days, as pure quant has its limitations(overcrowding being the big one) and so shops need some different ideas when they have a lot of money to trade.

While they prefer quant backgrounds, what they want most is smart capable people. If you network a bit, you can get some interviews. If you pass those, you'll get a role. There's plenty of smaller prop shops like TMG, Belv, Gelber, DV, OMC, etc. Plenty of great places.
