Take a day off from internship for competition?

I am currently a fixed income trading intern at a BB in NYC. I am also participating in the CFA Investment Research Competition, and the stock pitch presentation round takes place on a weekday, so I'll have to take a day off to compete. However, asking for a day off during your internship also makes you look bad at work. I really want a return offer. Do you think it's okay to take the day off to compete in a stock pitch competition (which is unrelated to my rates internship)?

Edit: I already committed to this competition before my internship started and if I don't go, then I'll let my teammates down.

I wouldn't, I don't think it's a risk worth taking. Your main objective should be to get the return offer. You've already participated in the research with your CFA group. If you don't get the return offer, you can always mention the work you did for the research competition in future interviews. Is going to the competition really worth potentially knocking a great gig you already have going on?

How many days vacation are you allowed to have during your internship?

If you have days left, ask your boss well in advance (a couple weeks), and do a good job on a regular basis, I don't see why you couldn't.

Plus it's not like your planning on going to a music festival or something and get wasted, it's for a CFA competition.
