The legend of sales
There are a lot of legends in trading, hedge fund, or PE area, but how about in sales area?
Yes, we often hear about famous “legends” in hedge fund, and some traders in IBs.
However, it is rare to find the “legend” in sales area, so I wonder who can be nominated as the “legend” of those sales field.
Here the definition of sales would be sales in Global Markets of IBs, Fundraisers in buyside (like HF, PE or AM) or placement agents.
Please nominate one and why.
My former boss at a BB was pretty close to legend status. Made MD at a young age as per the team standards, had a unique way of pressuring traders into pricing aggressively when needed and could source business like a killer.
Even global heads and some board member that came visiting us once seemed impressed by the dude.
Wow that’s actually impressive. I love to see those type of ppl not only in trading side, but also sales side.
Can I ask you how is he doing now? (Proposed to Head, moved to sales in buy-side, Bizdev in Tech etc)
Seems he retired as he made decent money and probably couldn't be bothered anymore
For me, my former boss who was MD in BB turned to be Startup Country Head in Japan at their later stage. After 4 years, the startup IPOed and he basically probably made around $20-$40 with stock options.
^ this career path is probably minor, but I think it’s actually the best way if you want to make money around your late 40s and retire around mid 50s with tons of money.
I’m assuming he was like a Sales Director or Head of Sales for the startup right?
In someway yes. It was BtoB SaaS startup and his job discription was manages Japan Team, Make a market entry strategy, and expand it to corporate clients.
I think it really is a hidden exit for sales ppl, but one of the most successful exists I can say.
Javier Loya.
commodity broker, left at 25 to start own firm, scaled, became one of the youngest ever invited to a NFL ownership group at like 30
Really nice. Equity Sales Trader > Brokerage startup could be an actual good exit. Thank you for the insight.
Are you a salestrader?
Michael Lewis and a couple of the others in Liar's Poker as well. Bit out dated now though.
True. Sales > notable writer is also really good exit. One of my friend’s dad is also exited to Bloomberg editor at the later stage....
