Trading 101 - Technicals to determine good entry points

To some this might sound like dumb questions but I'm interested in learning a bit of what trading is all about. I've always been so focused on investment banking that I've never paid trading much mind until now. If anyone has any information to give about the following, I'd greatly appreciate it.

  1. While I realize it's a lot less structured than i-banking, what's the typical progression? (ie: ibd would be analyst (2 yrs) --> associate (3-5) --> vp and so on) What's the pay like during this progression? Both base and percentage of returns?

  2. How would you "learn how to trade". I'm familiar with a lot of the fundamental driving forces behind long term picks. But how do traders use technicals to determine good entry points/short term picks? Any books I can read on this?

Thanks in advance.
