Trafigura Grad Program - Outlook/Opportunities

Does anyone have insight to the Trafigura graduate program? Is it able to go from ops/mid office in the grad program to a trading seat? What would be the best desks to start on if so (crude, products, etc)? If you leave after the program, can you get a decent job/seat somewhere else?

Based on the WSO threads and discussions, the Trafigura Graduate Programme is highly competitive and offers a robust platform for launching a career in commodities trading. Here’s what you need to know about transitioning within the company and potential career paths post-program:

  1. Transitioning to a Trading Seat: It is possible for participants in the Trafigura graduate program to move from operations or mid-office roles to trading positions. Success in such transitions typically depends on performance, networking within the company, and timing. Demonstrating a strong understanding of market dynamics and trading strategies during your tenure in the program can enhance your chances of moving into a trading role.

  2. Optimal Desks for Aspiring Traders: If your goal is to move into trading, starting on desks like crude or refined products can be advantageous. These areas are core to Trafigura's business and provide exposure to significant market movements and trading strategies. Gaining experience in these commodities can provide valuable insights and skills that are transferable to trading roles.

  3. Career Opportunities Post-Program: Exiting the Trafigura Graduate Programme can lead to substantial opportunities within the broader commodities and trading industry. The experience and knowledge gained are highly regarded in the industry, and former graduates are often considered for roles in trading houses, investment banks, and commodity firms. Networking and maintaining relationships within the industry during your stint at Trafigura can be crucial in securing subsequent positions.

Overall, the Trafigura Graduate Programme is seen as a stepping stone to a dynamic career in commodities trading, with various pathways available depending on individual performance and the strategic cultivation of industry relationships.

From what I understand, the Trafigura graduate programme career progression looks like this: grad programme (2yrs, rotations across finance / ops / other) >> full time role, likely in one of the teams you've rotated across >> after 2-3yrs in such role, and with the necessary networking, you might then be assessed for a trading role.

Trafigura tends to hire externally for trading roles (i.e. those with 3-7yrs of prior trading experience), Glencore (other than for senior seats where they have a pressing need) do not.

What does it take to get a trading seat from the grad scheme? Is it possible in sooner than 5 years?
