It is a "trader" who works in equity side of Prime Brokerage //www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/ask-me-any-question-you-have-about-prime… you try to raise secured funding with HF's long equity positions as collateral. your counterparty is usually an asset mgmt company like vanguard or state street. you pay them overnight rate + 50 bps for example on the cash you raise. and you in turn charge HFs overnight + 80 bps on that balance. you basically giving HFs leverage. equity = your collaterals. some collaterals are good (you can fund them cheaply). some are not so good.
