Who makes it in S&T?

Outsider here who knows nothing about S&T and is not planning to work in S&T.

Curious, what skills are needed to succeed in S&T and how do the required skills change as one gets more senior?

The uninformed, outside perception is probably that the smartest kids with the highest P&L win, like at a hedge fund. But then I also hear that things can be different at banks, and that losing money is not always a massive issue. The watermark resets after each year anyway.

How important are soft/people skills and schmoozing?
