Absolutely unheard of TC out of grad school, am I CLUELESS about the industry???

Not from the VC industry so I genuinely have no clue about what is going on with the salaries here, just had rough numbers in mind. 
A friend of mine just told me he signed a job offer a week ago, with a top VC (doesn't share the name to protect anonymity), NYC, and after an MS at Top university (HYPS). Friend in question is starting as an ASO 1 (as he says, because has a master, not as analyst 1, I didnt even know there were these titles in the VC industry) and has signed for a 250K base comp + 50% bonus which makes 375k?!! Working hours seem light af aswell from what I understood. Opinions on this? Enlighten me because I feel like I have just discovered a whole new dimension. (FYI, I had in mind numbers more like 200k TC).
