Consulting --> Corp Dev --> VC

I currently work in strategy consulting at Accenture/Deloitte/IBM/ATK and have an interesting problem. I graduated college in May and have been working for about 8 months. I don’t really love the role and I think I could be learning a ton more doing something I am passionate about. Work has been slow and this opportunity would position me well for my dream job of being a VC.

I have the opportunity to potentially work as a corp dev lead for a well known VC. There are some factors inhibiting me from jumping ship. I am hesitant to leave as I am not entirely sure if I’d enjoy this particular role, but it would push me closer to VC (I think). If I am to stay, I would see a promotion in ~ 1 year with a substantial increase in pay.

My questions are:

  1. What can I really expect in a corp dev role like this?
  2. Is this a good role to position me for VC later (dumb question)?
  3. Will anyone care about my first job at ACCN/Deloitte/IBM/ATK 3/5/7 years from now if I left for this?
  4. Any other thoughts you might have.

Thanks!

Define the role a little bit better. By corp dev do you mean biz dev for the VC? If so, that's effectively a cold calling position, which I wouldn't recommend as you won't build sufficient hard skills. Maybe you could transition to an investment role, if they love you, but it will be an uphill battle.

If by corp dev, you mean doing M&A/fundraising work for portfolio companies then I would definitely take it.

Corp dev is not a common title at most VC firms so it's a little ambiguous.

I'd also like to hear about OPs current role. Why don't you like it? Maybe you're just not making the most of it or maybe there's skills there that you still need to develop before making any move.

If you're that recent of a graduate, there's plenty of time to make moves in your career, you need to have the patience to get there.
