As an associate/investor at a GE/VC firm, can you invest in public equities or are there any trade restrictions?

Most firms don't let you trade individual stocks. You can sell individual stocks with pre-clearance (my firm takes about a day to OK the sale) if you already own them but can't buy any once you start. ETFs are normally fair game, however, not requiring any sort of clearance.
