Hey All: From the Sciences but hoping to break into HF/VC/IB
Hello fellow primates! I am new here, a long time reader but this is my first posting. I am a straight talker so here goes. First my background: I am a year out of Boston University and kind of new to the business world. I graduated with a degree in Neuroscience with a 2.88/4 (I know, pretty poor) for a number of personal reasons but my transcript shows an upward trend. I got a 2050 on my SAT and had an A- average in high school. I took 4 months after graduating college to study for the MCAT and apply to Medical Schools but after writing my personal essay and having that time to reflect deeply, I recognized that med school wasn't for me. Another big indicator was that my Essay seemed to revolve around me not becoming a doctor for the patients but for the business I'd be creating. Since then, I have changed my focus to intro level finance jobs but with no luck (and not terribly surprised). My background is a mixture of biology, statistics, and psychology with previous university jobs requiring regular use of Excel, SPSS, and my ability to translate findings into layspeak with presentations and talks. What I am wondering is, is there hope for me in the Business world without getting another degree or should I be trying to network and applying to jobs more fitting to my major and moving from a research associate position toward something more business-y within the company with a few years under my belt? I am not afraid of long hours and hard work as my previous employers can attest. Right now, I work in construction both managing jobs and as a laborer to pay the bills. Attached is my resume. Any insight and words of wisdom are appreciated and I'll answer any questions you may have. Thank you.
