I would probably need to take a $200-250k pay cut for VC from PE, No way about this right?
I did 2 years IB then 2 years at a UMM PE firm, my all in last year was around $450k. I expect my all in at any VC firm will be like $150-$250k? There is literally just no way to go around this, and most who went PE > VC I assume did the same?
Kind of depends on size of firm / investment stage you're looking to join, but yeah it's almost certainly a paycut. Local investor learns about economic tradeoffs!
Depends on the tier of VC you’ll be joining - top-tier VC like Sequoia/A16Z pay on par to UMM PE while offering you higher upside via co-invest or carry
sequoia maybe but a16z definitely underpays significantly relative PE. if we're talking about the growth and not the early stage teams then it's a different story
Wrong. Even top tier ones don't pay as much (presuming they are a pureplay VC). Multi-stage is a better indicator.
Wrong, could you provide source for your viewpoint? Check out industry comp benchmarking, both Sequoia and multi-stage VC/GE funds pay comparable to UMM PE, and only a few % of UMM PE associates can successfully pivot to VC/GE
You're repeating what I just said. A pureplay VC won't generally match comp. A multi-stage fund generally does.
Yes - this is normal. Honestly, even 150K is higher than average. Don't forget that the average VC is not coming from IB/PE...it's mostly SWE or consultants, where $150K is not a major paycut.
There are some multi-stage funds who can pay closer to MMPE but obviously those are rare. Are you at least getting carry?
