Incentive to Use American Waterfall Returns (per Deal as opposed to per Fund)

What is the incentive for limited partners to participate in funds with american waterfall carried interest that applies to individual deals as opposed to the aggregate fund. LPs could pay carried interest on individual deals despite a total fund return below a hurdle rate or even below zero.
