Industry Change- Switch from Real Estate PE to VC

I'm contemplating leaving the real estate industry in NYC after starting up a successful investment firm. My partner recently informed me that he is leaving to pursue his passion for trading and taking our seed capital investors (his family friends). Instead of getting back into the ultra competitive NYC job market, I was thinking of making an industry jump into VCs. Now, I have no prior knowledge of valuing companies but during college I was the 1st COO of the Kairos Society and left a year later to start my own non-profit which I quickly expanded into 50 colleges. I know how to build an a company from scratch and developed a large start-up network b/c of my Kairos days. I already have access with two start-ups that I believe would be interesting investment opportunities.

I don't want to spend the $ to get a MBA since I want to learn practical experience. I was thinking of moving in with my family in Sunnyvale and applying for a year long (un)paid internship at a VC in SF or in the bay area to develop my skills. I just turned 27 so I don't think I'm that old to switch industries. What do you guys think? Good or bad idea? How do you think I should word my cover letter?
