Investing in "Revolutionary Ideas" that haven't been proven yet

I just started working at a strategic VC and we are looking at a space that seems to have a ton of potential / money behind it but it comes with a ton of risks and is in a very early stage / needs to be proven.

Are there any examples of failures / successes in overall ideas / markets that were burgeoning. I am looking to really learn how to analyze such innovative yet unproven ideas. My thinking is that every ideas was once unproven and came with risks but want to develop the mindset that the entrepreneurs / investors who backed such ideas had to push it forward.
