Non-Target meeting with VC's in the Midwest? Advice on ways to impress them?
So I have a meeting with several Venture Capitalists next week. I am graduating from a non-target school in May and have a relatively untraditional background.
I've been aggressively networking in the Midwest for the past couple months now. I have meetings with four different VC firms next week. My goal is to break into the industry.
I would love nothing more than to land a job or internship with one of these firms. Anyone have any advice on the best ways to absolutely Wow these guys?
Going in with a mentality that you have to do or say something to impress is a recipe for disaster. You're an undergrad talking to accomplished professionals. You are not impressive to them. Don't try to be.
Show them that you are curious and capable. 1) Polish your story of who you are so you showcase things that demonstrate an interest in what they do and how you capitalized on opportunities that came your way. 2) Treat the meeting as an opportunity to learn about them, their company and their industry rather than an opportunity to land a job. Ask them thoughtful questions that you can't google or learn from a textbook.
Leave them thinking "this kid knows he doesn't know much, but he wants to learn and it's worth our while to teach him."
