SE Asian VC scene?

Top target, incoming IB SA at good BB group, fluent in a regional language. Most of the stuff I've seen so far is out of Singapore — Openview, Sequoia, etc. Anyone have good insight on firm trajectories/cultures in the region? Only have American citizenship unfortunately but I'm hoping school + fluency + IB background will help. Beyond Singapore, very interested in Jakarta/Indonesia and KL/Malaysia as well.

All major VC activities in SEA are based in Singapore. There are some smaller Vacs based in Indonesia, Thailand, and elsewhere but they won't compare in reputation or pay to Singapore. But if you're going more out of pure cultural interest, I'm sure a small VC firm in KL/Jakarta would want you.

Agree with above. Most of the major funds in the region are based in SG but from there invest throughout the region, so you can get broad SE Asia exposure across Indo, VN, PH, Malaysia, etc. being based in Singapore. Personally, I think that's really attractive. You have the benefit of working from a modern city with great infrastructure, favorable taxes, and still get to invest broadly in the region.

Major firms in SE Asia include:

1) Global multi-stage firms with regional practices: Sequoia, Lightspeed, GGV, B Capital, Partech, GFC

2) SG based pan-SE Asia funds: East Ventures, AC, Alpha JWC, Insignia, Jungle, Golden Gate, Openspace, Monks Hill

3) Specialized regional funds focusing on one country: Intudo (Indo only), Febe (VN only)

Just a sampling, I'm sure there are lots of other funds. VC activity has really blown up there in the past decade.
