Specialization

I am very interested in VC and was a bit confused on this. If you are working at a VC like Insight that invests in software, do you specialize in a specific vertical in software or do you source all types of software start ups? How would this vary at a VC with lower headcount? I am specifically interested in health tech, consumer tech, and cybersecurity but I am not sure which sector to pursue.

VCs have investment themes, an existing network, more and less popular areas (based on their own insight/merit/network/opinion,..), sometimes they lead or not, they have preferences for ticket sizes and what stage they want to enter a deal and so much more. They may go into software that automates accounting, but not into any other bookkeeping tools. They may like digital ledger for companies, but not cryptos, ..

it all depends.

it is beneficial if the team has diverse work and interest areas, not all from the same corner of the industry. But again, it depends on the shop & fund size, their appetite for risk, ..

Are you able to easily move around across sectors in a career or does it behoove you to specialize early?
