VC Comp Expectations

Current Junior in college about to do an IB SA internship and plan to do the couple years in IB to start career. I'm really interested in VC and startup culture but am worried about how much I would be losing money wise by going VC vs PE. Also is IB->VC trajectory common? If anyone could provide some insight it would be much appreciated!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. VC Compensation vs. PE:

    • Venture Capital (VC) compensation is generally lower than Private Equity (PE), especially at the junior levels. While PE offers higher pay due to its focus on established companies and larger deal sizes, VC compensation tends to increase in later-stage funds or as you move up the ranks.
    • VC pay is not as high as hedge funds or PE, but it can become competitive over time, particularly if you are part of a successful fund or portfolio.
  2. IB to VC Trajectory:

    • The IB-to-VC path is less common compared to IB-to-PE. VC firms often value diverse backgrounds, including those from startups, technology, or strategy consulting, as VC decisions are more strategic and trend-based rather than purely quantitative.
    • That said, IB experience can still be valuable in VC, especially if you focus on sectors like tech or healthcare, where financial modeling and deal experience are relevant. Networking is critical, as VC recruiting is highly unstructured and often relies on connections.
  3. Key Considerations:

    • Work-Life Balance: VC offers a much better work-life balance compared to IB or PE.
    • Exit Opportunities: VC exit opportunities include joining or founding a startup, moving into corporate development at a tech company, or staying in VC. However, transitioning from VC to PE can be more challenging than the reverse.
    • Passion for Startups: If you're genuinely interested in startup culture and innovation, VC might be worth the financial trade-off. It's essential to weigh your long-term career goals and interests against the compensation differences.

If you're set on VC, use your IB stint to build a strong network and gain deal experience, which can help you pivot into VC later.
