VC/Tech PE Opps: Non Technical PM at GOOG/FB
Hi guys,
Just landed a gig at a tech company as a product manager (will finish undergrad april 2019)
With recruiting schedules crazily pushed up, I was wondering if recruiting for VC or Tech PE would be possible from my position, and if anyone had any advice on how to best approach the process (as I'd be coming from a non traditional background)

i've seen people move from pm to VC but not really lateral to PE. For VC recruitment its mainly about building the network and being knowledgeable about different verticals in tech. Try to be able to show a unique value-add when talking to VC's and then stay in contact as most funds don't necessarily have a traditional recruiting cycle.

Tech PE's really unlikely to happen, especially if you're trying to recruit a few months into the job. There's just no replacing having actual transaction experience and the associated skills that come along with it (consultants excluded). If you're set on PE, maybe consider trying to lateral into banking first.
VC's similarly going to be an uphill battle, though there does tend to be a greater diversity in backgrounds. To the extent you're interested in VC, I'd suggest staying in your PM role for at least a year plus before you start recruiting so you can ideally have some actual projects/experience you can point to. Then start reaching out to recruiters and networking with VCs about potential opportunities.

I'm definitely planning on staying for more than a year (the program im in is a 2 year rotation).
Do most VC's not use headhunters then? So I'd be better off connecting with analysts at the actual firms?
It's a mixed bag with more variety in processes and timelines. Some use headhunters, others don't. Some recruit a year+ ahead, some recruit for a few months ahead / immediate start. Would suggest reaching out to headhunters (there's been discussion on WSO regarding those with more vc clients) as well as networking with associates to get a sense of when they might be recruiting,.
The VC transition from your seat is very possible and the skillset is very relevant. Anything closer to buyout will be much more difficult / very unlikely. This is speaking as someone who worked in IB in a tech group and spoke with various funds.
