Blackrock Fundamental Equities vs Blackrock Financial Market Advisory

Hey guys,

Does anyone have any information on Blackrock's Financial Market Advisory division? It seems like a really interesting division, but there is limited information on the day-to-day of the role, comp, progression, exit opps, etc. online.

I have been speaking with senior members of the Fundamental Equity (FE) team in Blackrock and senior members of the Financial Market Advisory (FMA) division. I want to get an idea of what a career in FMA would look like and how it would compare to FE? Obviously I can only pursue one of these roles as they are both in Blackrock - So what are peoples thoughts on both/this dilemma?

Any insight on this would be hugely appreciated. Thank you.

What is the comp like in FMA vs FE? Assume FMA pays a lot less considering it is closer to consulting?

Do FMA typically go through quite periods (ie - when there is no major crisis occurring), or do they typically have steady workflows?

I don't know the difference, if any, in comp. My sense is that FMA has gone through some serious cycles - I believe they really staffed up quite a bit in the early 2010s in the aftermath of the GFC because they did a lot of Eurozone crisis advisory, then did a lot of layoffs around 2018, then have staffed up significantly again since they've been doing so much work for the Fed during Covid. Take this with a grain of salt because I don't work anywhere close to FMA and they are pretty siloed off from the rest of the company (to the point that when the Fed mandate began at the start of Covid, an email went out to the entire firm basically saying "don't talk to anyone in FMA and if you do need to for any reason you must go through Legal first").

Please, don't chase prestige. Like previous said, two distinctly different roles and I'd say typically don't attract the same types of people. Look into the roles properly then you'll realise you don't need to ask this as the answer will be made very clear to you.
