DePaul MIS grad, advice for getting into wealth management business
I just graduated DePaul's Driehaus college of business with a degree in Management Information Systems. I received a 3.5 GPA, while better than the majority of students there, I know that's not what investment firms want if you're not coming from an ivy school. Also, the reason my GPA was relatively low is because I was going to school, working, & managing my own startup. I'm confident I would've had a 3.9+ if I dropped the startup.
So I've been thinking of going into the wealth management business, specifically hedge funds. I've started to invest my own money. I was thinking the best option for me to get into the industry would be to start a blog to track my investments, then assuming I do fairly well, I can get a job based upon my returns.
I was also thinking of getting a job in the IT dept. of a fund, just to get my foot in the door. Then try and transfer to the trading side of the business.
While I didn't necessarily study finance, I've been introduced to the subject my whole life. My dad has been day trading for most of his life. He is an entrepreneur but doesn't need to work that much anymore because his employees handle most of the work so he constantly trades futures & options throughout the day. We've been discussing investing & the markets for as long as I can remember.
If anyone has any advice for getting my foot in the door as a trader, I would appreciate any advice you can offer. Thank you.
