How do I get on a track for personal financial advisory?
I am a junior finance major at Tulane University with a 3.9 cumulative GPA. My last 2 summers have been spent as a marketing intern for an ESL school, and a press intern for the office of the governor of Massachusetts. I have not been able to find a finance internship the past 2 summers, and am hoping to finally find something related to my field this summer.
However, I honestly don't know where to begin. I sent out dozens of applications for internships last summer, and was hoping with my GPA I would receive some interest, but ultimately only got 2 interviews- I was lucky to get an internship at all.
It seems WSO is mostly focused on I-Banking, VC and private equity- as is most of the finance world. I, however, am interested in becoming a personal financial adviser, and have not been able to find much information on the career itself nor how to break into it. Can you guys provide me with some direction on how to get started, and maybe what a career as an adviser is like?
Thanks!
It sounds like you're looking in the wrong places. If you really want to be an FA, financial advisor, I would suggest that you start at the top with the largest and most well respected firms and work your way down i.e. JP Morgan Private Bank or GS PWM. You shouldn't have too much trouble securing a PWM internship w/ a 3.9 from Tulane.
