Networking for RIA Firms or Wealth Management firms

Hello,

I am currently a junior transfer student at a decent University (non-target). I really want to get into Private Banking or wealth management or financial advisory.

I know I am late to the game but I dropped the ball with 2025 internships, I want to still get one but I am now also aiming for 2026 now as my important internship. I am thinking of delaying a semester to get this to work.

I plan on cold emailing or calling all local RIA firms in my area for networking purposes in order to land an internship for either 2026 or optimistically 2025.

My question is how do I approach this in terms of who to connect with? I've networked for IB but not for wealth management firms.

  • Should I just google their teams and cold email 2 people high up at that firm? Or target people with a lower position but maybe have more in common like alumni.
  • Should I just straight up email Financial Advisors and send my resume+ ask for a coffee chat to learn about their experience or straight up ask if they would accept an intern?

Any help is appreciated as I have networked before but for some reason I feel overwhelmed doing it with a new path in mind being WM/PWM

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can effectively network for RIA or Wealth Management firms:

  1. Targeting the Right People:

    • Start with alumni if possible. Alumni are often more receptive to outreach, especially if you share a school connection. Use your university's alumni directory or LinkedIn to identify alumni working in wealth management or RIA firms.
    • If alumni are not an option, consider reaching out to Financial Advisors (FAs) or Relationship Managers at these firms. Analysts or associates might also be approachable and can provide insights into the day-to-day work.
  2. Cold Email Strategy:

    • Avoid emailing multiple people at the same firm simultaneously. Instead, prioritize one or two individuals who are either high up (e.g., senior advisors) or share a commonality with you (e.g., similar background, school, or interests).
    • Your email should be concise and professional. Start by expressing genuine interest in their career path and the firm, and request a coffee chat or informational interview to learn more about their experience. Avoid directly asking for an internship in the first email; focus on building a relationship first.
  3. Coffee Chat Approach:

    • During the coffee chat, ask thoughtful questions about their career, the firm's culture, and the skills they value in interns. This will help you stand out as someone genuinely interested in the field.
    • Toward the end of the conversation, you can subtly inquire about internship opportunities by saying something like, "I’m currently exploring opportunities to gain experience in wealth management. Do you have any advice on how I might position myself for an internship at a firm like yours?"
  4. Follow-Up:

    • After the chat, send a thank-you email and maintain the relationship by occasionally updating them on your progress or sharing relevant articles or insights. This keeps you on their radar for future opportunities.
  5. Cold Calling Local Firms:

    • For smaller RIA firms, cold calling can be effective. Prepare a brief pitch introducing yourself, your interest in wealth management, and your desire to learn more about their firm. Be polite and professional, and ask if they’d be open to a quick conversation or meeting.
  6. Timing and Persistence:

    • Many smaller firms may not have structured internship programs, so timing is key. Reach out in the spring when they might be planning for summer interns. Persistence is important, but always remain respectful and professional in your follow-ups.

By focusing on relationship-building and targeting the right individuals, you can effectively network your way into an internship in wealth management or private banking. Good luck!
