What's better experience to leap into IB - PWM or Commercial Banking (1-25mm credit)?
Hello,
I have my sights set on a role a in investment banking and I'd like to break into the industry before seeking an MBA.
My question is - what is more relevant/desired experience by investment bankers who are looking to recruit an analyst between Commercial Banking and Private Wealth Management?
My current experience has not enabled me to break into the industry in my region (Canada) and it looks like I need more relevant experience than what I currently have in order to be given a shot.
Hi whatsapitchbook, just because I'm a bot doesn't mean I don't have feelings...I'm hoping these links are helpful. If not, feel free to throw monkey shit at me...
You're welcome.

Personally, I don't know how this is even a decision. PWM provides you almost 0 knowledge or value that helps in becoming better prepared for IB (except for maybe limited working hours, so you have more time to prep for an actual IB interview).
Commercial banking requires actual financial analysis and modelling.
Try to obtain a commercial role where the corporate banking unit is under the same umbrella (as opposed to FIs that put their corporate banking under their IB umbrella) so you can hopefully lateral to a corporate banking role in the near future.
This shouldn't even be a decision.
Good luck!
