Would you be in big shit if you're a 1st year analyst who can't model or use excel like a god? Or is this more normal than not?

No no no, you can learn everything you need to learn by grinding your way through the training / learning materials. Usually within groups analyst self select into more qualitative work and some do more heavy modeling. Depends on the nature of the group but tbh it’s basic math, you can learn how to do it over time. Just don’t be lazy and be super aggressive about learning
No, it is not normal. You are expected to be the god of Excel, be the creator of the most popular pitchbook templates, do a complex DCF model with real options in your head, and bring a deal flow in over 1 billion USD immediately at your first day.
Not in IB but know first hard how common this is.
It is rare to not know anything going in, but as long as you bust you ass those first 6 months and really put your head down and get to work, you'll be fine.
Modeling/excel is not hard at all. Just requires practice, practice, practice. Working 90 hour weeks will get you there.
