3 years of working experience entering Masters in Finance
Hi all
i have read through nearly all the Masters in Finance forum posts and I am seriously quite worried about my 3 years of working experience when entering my Masters in Finance program in Sep 2012.
I will be enrolling into Msc Finance at Imperial College (still waiting for LBS Masters in Finance results though) this Sep with 3 years of working experience. I missed the boat last year as I only decided to get a Masters last Mar after realizing that my current job is not for me (by then applications were closed). I am extremely worried when I graduate because I am neither an associate and some may say I am too senior to be an analyst. My 3 years were spent at a Government Ministry doing Public Finance work. I actually don't mind being an analyst but I am scared that employers may not see it that way.
As for the MBA part, I seriously think I am too young for an MBA and I already have a BBA education(Major in Finance). I see no point in getting more exposure to management or marketing modules when the field I am most interested in is trading, particularly FX trading. Plus seniors have told me that companies will sponsor an MBA when they feel that you are ready for management. The fact that an MBA takes a longer time to complete and is also more expensive puts me off.
My end goal is working in London, Hong Kong or Singapore.
Would appreciate your honest advice please, especially for those who have studied in any Masters in Finance programs before. How did your older classmates fare after graduation? Many Thanks.
Why not try to move directly from your position somewhere else. Why do you think its absolutely necessary for a masters. I may not have all the information here but it seems like you could network your way into trading.
thanks for the reply.
well, I did try applying for trading jobs but I got no replies. Either my resume was poor (I mean why would a firm want to hire someone who had been in Public Finance industry + no quant education, to trade) or the market was bad. I thought maybe its better I go back to school to upgrade myself + build more networks.
I come from a non target school thus I think the Imperial or LBS brandname will give me more opportunities. The problem is only my age.
LBS and imperial are different.
People in this forum make the mistake to put LSE, Imperial and LBS on the same level... this is not true. LBS Mfin is a pre experience course that will allow you to start as associate!
yea, but I am still waiting for LBS to get back to me.
Imperial has already offered me. If LBS rejects me and I go to Imperial, what are your thoughts? :(
