Investment Banking in Calgary?

Hi guys!

I was just wondering if any of you have any information about the banking industry in Calgary. Is it realistic to think about being hired from Haskayne into banking in the city? Or is it a smarter idea to go out east to Ivey or Queens? I know Investment Banking is not a definite thing, but I'd still like to try :)

Thanks in advance!

UC and UA are targets for Calgary banking with the general understanding that most kids tend to want to stay in Calgary for the long term and are fine with being in energy. East coast schools are very concentrated on Toronto banking but a few do go to Calgary. Recruiting for Calgary from Ivey or Queens isn't an issue with the banks as most students are from the area and can craft their story to answer the why Calgary question. Just be aware that it limits you to O&G banking while Toronto banking is far more diverse.

If the goal is to stay in Calgary, Haskayne consistently places very well in Calgary IB across all of the banks (Canadians, BBs, etc.) - you can easily use LinkedIn as a cross-reference as well to see the backgrounds that place.

If you want to have more optionality to place in TO / NY, etc. then probably makes more sense to go to school out east.
