Some Americans these days are trying to order custom made food from fast food restaurants – ones so wildly different from already existing menu items that it’s a wonder if it’s really even worth it. Some of the things people have come up with look pretty alright – like the ice cream sandwich between a Kouign Amann – while others are subject to suspicion, like a peanut butter bacon cheeseburger from Shake Shack.
Peanut butter anywhere near cheese just sounds pretty gross but whatever floats people’s boats I guess.

Some places like Chipotle have made good use of the recent trend and included the hot (aka secret) Quesarito onto their menus under a new price. This, of course, was a party pooper and upset many who were very into the secret Quesarito.
After reading about the Quesarito case, I’m actually wondering what the final order will end up costing for some of the more extravagant recipes for some restaurants. I can’t imagine this trend will end well for businesses if it really picks up – especially ones hit with extravagant recipes -- unless they make use of them as part of their menus. But, what do you all think?
Can this new trend actually lead to something new for fast food? Would any of you actually bother trying this at your favorite restaurant chain?
I first became aware of "secret menus" from In-N-Out. The animal style burger, then fries, & also shake are what started the craze in CA. Now people add chopped chillies, flying dutchman, whole grilled onions, protein style, grilled cheese, Roadkill Fries & tons of other crazy orders. I have seen people add their own avocado to an animal style burger. Now it's pretty much everywhere. Not so much secret menus but fully customizable menus.
...Protein style? Aha what... like, protein powder sprinkled onto their burgers? That's... quite something... lol. I definitely wouldn't have thought of protein powder as something to stock up on for any restaurant. I've never been to an In-N-Out before, are those largely West coast chains? I'm from the East coast and I've never seen any though I keep hearing about them.
