About to get fired as an Intern, please help!!!

Dear WSO,

I'm getting into big troubles now. So I'm a rising Junior at a non-target interning for couple FAs at a BB PWM office this fall, my VP told me to attend an office party next Tuesday afternoon couple days ago, my working schedule is Monday, Wednesday and Friday every week, but I agreed to attend since I had nothing on my schedule last week.

However, The MD I was supposed to meet from a MM/Elite Boutique this week messaged me and rescheduled our meeting on next Tuesday, I tried to reschedule but he said that next Tuesday was the best time for him. As for this MD, I cold emailed him this summer, and after we've been keeping in touch, so far we've talked three times on the phone, all were short 5 minutes around calls, he acknowledges that I'm looking for an internship next year, and he told me that normally his office do not take interns but he's willing to meet me and recommend me to all different departments and companies. He never guaranteed to offer me something and I believe this isn't even a formal interview meeting, but I still hold a lot hope here since he knows I'm looking for internships and he's willing to help.

So I messaged my VPs at BB PWM, apologized like 10 times and explained everything, however they were so pissed off, they told me the conversation was done and I make my own decision, basically I either go to their party or resign. I told them like couple weeks ago that I was looking for internships next year and thanked them for the opportunity, they were kind of shocked(They want me to stay for a full year) but still gave me best wishes and were going to write me recommendation letters.

The party is for Halloween and only internal employees will attend, it is not mandatory and tons of people aren't going, they said they wanted me there to help preparing and cleaning, but honestly speaking, they are just trying to make me wear their stupid fucking costume and be a fucking clown since they told everyone that they were planning to make me look "special".

At this point I'm trying to be as calm as possible, I do not want to fuck up the relationships with BB PWM VPs since they are the fucking top 100 FAs in the nation, and I'm afraid how I'm going to explain this internship and give referrals in the future jobs. But I also do not want to miss this meeting with that MD, I've been planning to meet him for months and finally a chance came up, maybe this will not land me an internship but still worth to try, plus he's not that flexible or responsive so I really do not know how this reschedule is going to work out.

Should I apologize to the FAs again and quit? I feel like 3 extra days a week for networking is going to be extremely helpful since I haven't got any offers for next year by now, and I plan to do much more cold calls and cold emails. I wonder if anyone had quit for different situations before, and how would you explain this internship to future employers? What if HRs want to call your previous employers? Or should I just try to reschedule again(Probably not going to work since I tried) and give up the IBD MD meeting?

I really need your help and I feel like I better get back to the VPs before midnight tonight, please give me your advice on this situation, thank you so much.

You should attend both events. Start with the networking/MD meeting and then proceed to the party. To not lose time, and I cannot stress this enough, you want to wear the costume already when meeting with the MD.

This isn't that hard, it's basically investing. Figure out which one will pay more dividends in the future and go with that. Risk vs reward.

There are about 9 different threads on the recent comment section discussing stuff such as target schools, what scores do I need and what ties to wear, all that bs stuff. This thread is an example that of all that stuff doesn't matter, (i know you're still in school) when presented with an opportunity, just figured out a way to get it done.

What are you going to do in 5/10 years when a major client wants you to meet at a certain time and it runs close to another client crucial event?

Highly recommend you wear a totally different costume than what the BB PWM firm told you to wear and prank them back. OK, on a serious note, why can't you just attend both events? Your numerous phone calls with said MD lasted just a few minutes - length of time is not going to be much different when you meet the MD in person. I would say max 15-20 minutes of catch up time in person. You should still be able to make the party. What time is the party? Also presuming you haven't scheduled the time yet with the MD - how about you kindly suggest a time before the time of the party? Also, this is a party we're talking about, not a client meeting, so being a few late shouldn't hurt you.

Also, when you "messaged your VPs and apologized 10 times", at that point did you already tell them that you had a catch up with an MD on that Tuesday? Understand that it's already a done deal, but next time don't tell your current employer of anything related to your next potential job.

Let us know how it goes. Hope the best

Thank you for response. The party is 9AM to 3PM(They told me I had to be there the entire time) cause they want me to "help", and the MD meeting is 1:30PM, so there is not way I can make it, I guess it really comes down to what Ironman32 said, I need to make a choice.

As for nor informing them, yeah, I was a fucking retard to trust them since they seemed like really decent people and they acted they were very very open about this, I'm never ever going to trust any employers any more, lesson learned.

I believe there is maybe 20% chance I can get a position under that MD next year, I'll definitely offer to work for free if that doesn't work.

I wonder which one would you personally pick, get dinged for the next 3 to 5 years whenever any HR check my previous internships and contact them or give up the chance to network with a MD? Thanks.

Go to the party, either take something to throw up or make yourself throw up and try to get out of it. Also, try to find a way to tell them that you preferred them over the other position (to try and make up- like u made a mistake in the first place). They still might suspect it but its a solution.

you def made a mistake when telling them that you were going to blow off their party for a networking session (any number of things would have been better), but I'm sure you know that

here are your options: 1. Explain to the new MD that your current company is swamped on that tuesday, and has to bring you in, so you cant meet until a later date 2. Resign (but I think thats drastic over a halloween party) 3. Figure out a different excuse to miss the party/part of the party (this is harder, bc you already tried to get out of it, but maybe its still possible)

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I was totally retarded to tell them that, now it seems like the party is a "must", just wonder if I resign, how its going to affect me? I know HR will see this internship whether I put it on my resume or not right? And they will ask question and try to contact then on this? Thanks.

Thanks for the response. But HR will contact them for the date and whether I was terminated or not right? Maybe they use their power to screw me? At this point I really don't know what the fuck they are gonna do.

Stop being such a wavering cuck. You were dumb to tell them you had to miss the party for a networking event no doubt, but seems like you made it worse by being a pussy and apologizing profusely and acting like you'd done something wrong. Good chance the PWM guys are just hanking your chain because it's hilarious to see you squirm at this point.

In any case, go to the party for a while, head out to meet with the MD. They're not going to fire an intern over that. Just man up and make them respect you a bit. Also, don't offer to work for free or whatever drivel you were saying on here. That just makes you look desperate and not worthy of a hire.
