Accepted back office position with Goldman PWM- Possible to make switch to front office?

Rank: Chimp | 12

Greetings,

I just accepted a position for a back office front office.

I know that making this switch is a seriously daunting task, and many fail at getting it done. Does anyone have any tips or insight as to how I can make this happen?

I'm willing to go to as many networking events as needed and to stay late every day to prove myself.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Possible and likely are two different things. You should worry about performing well in your current job first before mulling over being stuck in the back office.

I used work in Insurance in a back office role and am now trying to move up in my career the hard way, would love to give you advice if you are finding success in finance isn't coming very easy to you either.

Certainly. This is the plan. Working hard is a given.

That being said, long term goals are never bad to have...

Leverage the fact that you are working at GS now, and try to network with FO people

Life is too short to be on WSO. But here I am.

Do people say "gumption?" Is that still a word?

Apparently they do in Utah

make sure you tell the FO guys how much gumption you have. they look for that kind of thing.

Would you recommend quoting it on a scale from 1-10, or have you developed a proprietary quoting convention that I should Implement?

binary scale. you either have it or you don't. there ain't no gumption gray area.

Why don't you go back to a small shop? FO at a boutique > BO at a BB.

I've had too much gumption for one day, I'm out.

I just hope Sean Morrison isn't your real name. That wouldn't be very gumptive.

"stay late every day to prove myself"

I doubt that will help you to land a role in FO. FO guys rarely value BO experience, why would they value your overtime there? I suggest putting more ephasis on networking, and make sure you do not solely rely on your manager when it comes to referrals because you have to pull it yourself.

Like someone already mentioned, you could aim for FO roles at smaller shops.

Everything is possible if you've got gumption. lol.

Seriously though...don't get stuck on whether something is conventional or possible or not. Learn the skills required for where you want to be and network the shit out of everyone you know. Hustle. Don't ask a board full of powertrip retards (generalization) if your dreams are possible. If you need to ask the question, I doubt you've got gumption. Good luck.
