Advice on renting in NYC right now? (starting FT this summer)

I'm scheduled to start full-time in early July and as of right now, we are starting on schedule. If that start date sticks, I'll need to have an apartment and be moved in by then. If it get's postponed, I can wait until I have to start going to the office to move into NYC. I'm not sure if I should wait until last minute to get an apartment, gambling that my start date gets pushed or if I should play it safe and start looking for apartments now to secure a good place for July. Does anyone have any advice on how to tackle this situation?

Side note: I don't have any roommates currently lined up as my planned roommate lost his job so I have to figure what I'm going to do there as well.

so under non-corona times, NYC apartments for super quickly. As in, you can’t really even look for an apartment to rent more than one month in advance. in the summer period, it’s a matter of days between when an apartment is listed for rent and when it’s rented out. so this may be moot. I’m not looking at the rental market right now but anyone chime in if there are listings for July start dates now.

Do not sign a lease; watch Cuomo’s daily updates instead. Investment banks in NYC plan on a slow re-integration back into offices with trading personnel first to return. Investment bankers will surely get back in sometime in Q3, but I don’t think you need to be rushing to sign a lease this summer.

Perfect question to run by HR closer to mid-June. Frame it with the intention of wanting to learn more about your firm’s current work-from-home policy and it’s effect on the employee base.
