Anonymity or Bust?
Hey guys, (prospective/current bankers, traders, etc),.
So browsing the forum, I've noticed everyone here seems obsessed with anonymity. I was just trying to get a sense of what the major issue is.
For example, everyone on here should know that userid: "strassa2" is Jason Strasser at Morgan Stanley.
But beyond that, everyone seems hellbent on protecting their identity.
Maybe its just me, but I thought I'd toss that out there.
Cheers
If you act like a tool online, you don't want everyone to know that you act like a tool online. I think that that is what it all boils down to.
That, and the fact that many people on here ask about choosing between firms and other sensitive stuff that could come back to bite them in the ass.
Also, if I post my name and phone number here, I will get a gazillion phone calls and emails asking me for a job. I enjoy helping people, but it isn't very practical for me to try and help thousands of people I don't know on the internet.
Finally, I'm not sure if I want to advertise that I'm associated with a forum that seems to have a bit of a reputation for many posters behaving immaturely.
People who are already working in industry- or Illinois grads- will occasionally get my name and contact information on a private basis. Usually this happens when they need to contact me (IE: if they need a ride up to Ellenville for hang gliding), or I'm working with their club to try and get our recruiters on campus.
Well hello, Mr. Swaps...
Fair argument.
I think its entertaining to consider the prospect that many of the college juniors/seniors who received SA/FT offers may end up sitting next to a guy in training that they argue with here on this forum.
Like the guy "Speculate" and "BBMMBoutique" arguing about GS prop trading... imagine them becoming bestfriends at their firm, never knowing that they acted like total jerks to each other on WSO.
haha that is hilarious actually.
I value my anonymity on WSO because I often talk candidly about my firm and others, and have often posted about certain people I've worked with or vented about frustrations on the job (asshole associates, etc). Not to mention all the students who post on here about interviews, etc.
I think it's obvious why myself and others value their privacy, especially in a world where everything is indexed by Google and preserved forever. For various reasons, it is likely not in my best interest if certain higher ups at my firm could trace comments back to my real name...

because I want to talk candidly without people also judging me on my looks, personality, and background. but people already know me anyways.
we have to be anonymous here. I really don't like people judging by the color of my skin. I always get dogged on for being black. They say I get to Harvard because I'm black, I get my GS TMT offer because I'm black, I get my Pre-MBA Associate position at KKR because I'm black, I make it to HBS because I'm black. I am an associate at TPG because I'm black.
I become a CFO because I'm black, I become a CEO because I'm black.
But finally reaching the level of CEO, if any of my employees mention anything about being black, they are immediately fired.
and then when you destroy Merrill Lynch.... they said it was inevitable, because you're black....
sucks to be Stan O'neal doesn't it....lol
^I'd be really interested in hang gliding.
