Anonymous Off Topic Has Come to an End

Time to go back to making alternate accounts so I can say controversial opinions

I'm half joking. Think this is the right move. It makes it much easier to ban trolls. But I will still be using alt accounts on off topic. I don't want to reveal where I live or what I do when it's a relevant qualifier to my comment in Off topic

The anonymous feature is most useful when discussing a firm-specific issue that you don’t want tied to the rest of your content. It’s a really helpful feature in that context.

On the Off-Topic, that rarely happened, so you could just be “Prospective Monkey” or “Analyst 1” and there was nothing keeping you from spamming a thread, and no one would be the wiser that they were the same person. This policy raises the barrier to entry to making alts for every comment, otherwise you’re going to get MS into oblivion and that’s that for the particular account.

Ultimately, I want the OFF to be a place where regulars talk about stuff and you learn more about each particular personality over time (Isaiah is different from Brofessor who is different from Drumpfy, and they all have their own distinctive biographies and writing styles). That’s why I’m here. I want to be around the same relatively tight-knit group of people in the Finance and adjacent industries who talk about everyday goings on. Anonymous accounts never gave me that, so I applaud the change.

Anonymous on an anonymous site makes very little sense.  If you do not give out your credit card information or social security number and do not say batshit crazy offensive stuff, you have very little to worry about.  Posting anonymously does not stimulate conversation.  It does the opposite in that some people do not want to talk to a zombie.

This was a decision that may hurt overall activity on the site but I believe should help raise the bar a bit on quality (and kindness).

The WSO usernames are already anonymous and while admins could still see the users responsible for anon posts (and they still could get voted up or down), I think it was being abused in many threads and creating a lot more violations than our mod team had ever seen.

Anon posting away from usernames is still allowed in industry forums to hopefully encourage those with inside knowledge to share without it being tied back to their account.

Thank you for the patience as we worked through these changes!
