Appropriate Ways to Ask for A Resume Push

Through an online summer mentorship program at a bulge bracket I have gotten to know a MD well enough that I feel like he could write a solid letter of rec (so far we have spoke with around 6 hours one on one and are meeting still, outside of the program around once a month). He is a really nice guy who has provided a lot of great advice for me. I was wondering what the most appropriate way for me to ask for him to push my resume. If there is no good way to do this, maybe I could ask for a letter of rec from him to use when applying to that bank? I am not well-versed in professional discourse and do not want to negatively affect my relationship with him by coming off as pushy or opportunistic. I am mainly considered about the number of spots for this internship class due to it being for sophomores and - of course - covid. I attend a non-target and have few connections at BBs so this guy is my main resource.

The above is bad advice. The MD is busy and balancing work and his/her life. Tell the MD you are strongly interested in applying for the bank that he/she is at, and was wondering if I would be able to use you as a reference in my application. If he/she says yes, thank him/her profusely and then try to talk with the MD about the part of finance you are trying to specialize in, and if the MD recommends that part of the bank and can connect you with someone in that department.

Example: MD says yes to referral say thank you. Then bring up how you're interested in TMT, and was wondering what you think about the industry and how the bank is doing in that industry. MD will talk about it, and if you like what you hear and/or want to learn more, ask if he/she would know anyone in that department that would be willing to speak with me.

The above is contingent on how much the MD likes you. If the MD says no, it's not the end of the world. You at least have a resource you can go to for questions, and at least you tried. Personally, if I invested so much time mentoring someone, I would go above and beyond to get them in as long as I liked them.
