B-School Review
I hear a lot of people talk about how it's not worth going to B-School unless it's a top 10 school, how it's a two year vacation, how it's for networking, etc.
How true is the statement about non-top 10's not being worth it? Do BB's and hedge funds recruit heavily out of schools ranked 10-25?
In other words, are there any top 25 schools that are NOT viewed as target schools in the industry, if so - which ones do you guys think they are? I'm just curious because i had horrible undergrad grades and am realistically aiming for schools between 10-25 such as Georgetown, etc.
I guess for the sake of argument we could use the USNWR rankings...
I wouldn't say that if you are not from a Top 8 MBA program- the famous names such as Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Columbia, Kellogg, Tuck, Chicago etc., its waste of time or 2 yrs of vacation blah blah..
Here is how I would analyze it- Given the fact that Top firms have a preference in recruiting at these brands, the chances that you will end up in either Mckinsey, bain or Goldman, KKR are quite high. This by no means is an indication that you cannot get into these firms by pursuing an MBA from 8-25 ranked schools but in general the probbability is reduced.
Now, it really depends on your background, work ex and post MBA career choice as well.
So essentially, you assume higher risk of not being able to get into the top brass if you do not make it to the Top 8 or so.
If you are thinking that the competition to get into these firms may be higher from Top schools b'cos then you are competing with the best of the breed candidates, you are right but then firms like Mckinsey and Goldman take 4-6 times more candidates from Top 5 compared to the Top 8-20.
Net net.. it really helps to have an MBA from Top 8, I would even say Top 5, but then if you can't make it, its OK. Life is short.. move on.
Big difference between the top and bottom of that range. NYU is a wall street pipeline and they aren’t considered top 10. Wall street & MBB do recruit at non/borderline top 10 schools such as Carnegie Mellon, Darden, Duke, Cornell, UT Austin, Yale & a few others. Not sure about G-Town.
Once you get to the bottom of the top 25, you are unlikely to get BB or MBB but can easily job at Deloitte Consulting or a MM bank. Those are great options for most people.
double - damn this site is slow.
