Background check question - First offer

I was wondering what exactly a background check entails?

I graduated very recently and may be receiving my first full-time offer soon. I don't have any work experience outside of retail or volunteer type stuff, but was curious what they actually look into for the background check? Is it mandatory and done for every new hire (this particular company is not a bank, but it is a finance position)

In my case, would it mainly just be for criminal history or credit report?

Also, I bumped my gpa up a bit on my resume since my actual was a 3.33 but I listed 3.4. Is that something that will be noted or a big deal? I had read some posts on here saying that it was alright to bump it a bit, but wanted to ask about a background check since I've never had one yet.

TIA!

I would expect a standard criminal and financial background check which is pretty standard for most finance positions. On a side note, in the future I would suggest not bumping your GPA. While it may seem minor, it shows that either you don't know how to round or you don't mind lying on your resume for the insignificant difference between a 3.33 and a 3.4. A .07 bump in GPA isn't worth it, especially since it is so easily verified.

I see, thx.

In addition to criminal and financial background check, do they go ahead and verify your academic information, including gpa?

I honestly was not going to bump it up because I thought it wasn't significant enough to do so, but after reading that M&I post, thought it was common or accepted, which is why I did it. The people at this firm are really nice and seem to like me so far; would it be a bad idea to somehow work it into the conversation that my actual gpa is slightly lower? I'm going to be meeting with them next week and so I could have an opportunity before an offer is extended, but it may end up looking awkward and they haven't focused or asked about my grades at all up to this point...

yea I didn't think the gpa increase would be that big of a deal, but now with a possible background check coming up, wanted to ask what goes into the background check. I don't have any arrests, criminal history/record, etc. and haven't "lied" about any of the qualifications or experiences on my resume.

I had read some posts on here that said rounding up as I did was fine, and I also saw this on M&I:

"2. How much can I round my GPA?

List your GPA with a single digit. You can get away with rounding your GPA by up to 0.09 in most cases. Some examples:

* Rounding a 3.43 to 3.5 – this is fine.
* Rounding a 3.65 to 3.7 – this is fine.
* Rounding a 3.27 to 3.5 – this is not fine.
* Rounding a 3.33 to 3.5 – this is not fine."

So based on that, thought it would be alright...

Is this seriously LEGIT??? so all this time i've been rounding my GPA DOWN??

3.51 = 3.6 instead of 3.5 ?? 3.24 = 3.3 instead of 3.2 ??

Note: Just checked out the M&I website...the guy who wrote this seems to be under the impression that this is for college seniors applying for analyst jobs only, so they have 1 more semester of unknown grades, meaning that the final GPA will likely change anyway.

So if your GPA is already 100% set, i doubt you can round this way.

Verifying academic information is fairly standard procedure with many, but not all, banks. Be wary of what you buy into on this or any internet forum. A lot of people on this forum are still in undergrad and have never had to interview for a job that doesn't require a name tag. What's done is done, don't go out of your way to point out your mistake in the interview. If they bring it up just say you rounded up and hope for the best.

Yeah they haven't brought up my gpa and have barely even spoken to me about my undergrad so far (aside from standard "why did you pick your major" type of questions), so I definitely won't go out of my way to point out my gpa.

But just wondering with regards to a background check, what would cause an offer to be revoked? Say everything checks out (no criminal history or financial problems), would they give me an opportunity to at least explain about the gpa? Or is it "zero tolerance" and one blip even if it's minor, means you don't get an offer?

I have no idea if there is standard procedure on background checks and how the results effect an offer, which is why I thought I would at least ask!

Hey man, I have experience with this ... the way these companies check your GPA is by requesting an official transcript from you, the candidate, upon being hired. Most companies don;t even do this. 3.33 to a 3.4 is definitely fine, you have absolutely nothing to worry bout bro. as for prior jobs, that will not show up on a check either. the way they verify work history is by grilling you in the interview, not by calling an old manager or by looking at a tax form or whatever. this would be too costly and take too much time. good luck brotha

hey thanks for the info! it definitely put me at ease.

I really want this job and the people there are really nice, so I thought even in worst case if I had a chance to explain, they would be understanding. But I didn't know how the process works, like if the background check is done and if there a "red flag", e.g. gpa rounding, the offer is automatically revoked. since that doesn't seem to be the case, I'm definitely not as worried.

Guys seriously.... this is not an issue. The background check is honestly to make sure you are who you say you are and you haven't done anything that would harm the firm in the eyes of FINRA if you ever did anything wrong while working there.

Relax, you can get a away with a lot and get into finance
