Barclays Capital Trading: ranking vs other top NY banks?

How does Barclays Capital's trading desks rank compared to other top New York banks? I am trying to decide if I should accept an internship offer there... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

BarCap is pretty solid. Within the trading space, BarCap is probably a top 5 player. Depending on the desk, I might rather work for GS, MS, or JPM, but I think BarCap is just as strong as (or stronger than) Citi, BAML, CS, UBS and Deutsche.

Is the BarCap internship rotational, or do you sit on one desk in particular? BarCap is a fixed income and currencies powerhouse, so sit on one of those desks if you're given the option. Also, BarCap is one of the (very) few firms that is big in the emissions trading markets in Europe. If you're interested in that, there is surely someone in the NYC office that will do it as well, and if carbon trading ever gets off the ground in the US, Barclays will be at the forefront of the market.

untilted:
very strong in everything but equities.

also very client/flow focused (for derivative desks at least)

research powerhouse (#1 in equity and credit).

Didn't they get a strong equities franchise from Lehman?

they did. it is good. but i won't say it is "very strong". MS, GS, CS, etc = very strong in equities.

Real strength is fx (a true global business), commodities (has physical trading in houston), rates (especially inflation linked), the non-structured side of credit.

summer program = rotational, 3 desks 3 weeks each, get placed onto one at the end of summer. You can get great exposure.

Its a good place to start and they should be even better once the synergies between them and lehmannnnn... In terms of equities, Barcap is not as strong as GS, MS or JPM, but Barcap is prob atter these banks (so 4th overall) I cant comment on derivs or FICCs, IMO all I can say is they are not the no.1 in any of the classes (maybe emissions?) but they are certainly within the top 5...

Yup agree that if you have the chance to rotate desks, take that opp. The key thing about internship is to get to know people.. not just to excel in the position.. I wasnt the best during my intern days but I sure did my fair share of networking (hence the job offer),

Anyways from what I've heard from friends and pple, BarCap has a good Sales trading team..

do you mean "sales AND trading team" or "equity sales-trading team"?

equity salestrading = kind of like an execution trader. very, very fast paced, but not as analytical in my opinion.

generalist sales = a.k.a. research sales = sells equity ideas (long/short) to portfolio managers. you talk about the fundamentals of companies, industries and the broad market.

liquid market sales = a.k.a. salestrader = interacts with execution traders on the buy side mostly.

hey its equity sales trading.. heard they are good in this area.. yeah its not as analytical but you can give good calls and build relationships as well..

jj50, whenever anyone tries to tell you who the "top ranked banks in trading are" and they give you a list of 5 names as a generalization, ignore them. You have to break it down by division or your ranking is meaningless

Equities (cash equity in particular): GS, MS, CS

Fixed Income (FX in particular): DB, UBS, Barclays, Citi, JPM

by extension, the interest rates desk rankings would be similar to FX due to the tight integration of FX/Interest Rates.

Im going to infer that youre also looking at compensation averages:

a look at these past figures may help in deciphering where the consistency lies.

If you want particular details, ask (as I work on one of the major equities desks)

CD~

CD is right. Another thing to consider is the level of scrutiny your firm of choice is facing. Even if Citi has a strong FX desk, you might want to second guess the decision because even a star on that desk (as of recently) will only get $100,000 (this year) in the cash component. Of course all banks are rethinking their compensation structure, but clearly some will be more restrictive than others.

i'd take fx or credit @ barcap. GS/J.Aron & MS are definitely the biggest commodity powerhouses in the u.s. though, and have extensive physical capabilities, especially for banks. barcap is right up there though.
