BB Derivatives Reg Ops vs FLDP at Big Pharma

Hey, everyone! I've been a longtime lurker on these forums and decided to make my first post today. I currently have an offer from a Big Pharma firm for a 3 year FLDP and my first rotation is going to be Financial Analysis and Reporting.

One of my colleagues reached out to me and secured me an interview with a BB in Derivatives Regulatory Ops. I understand that this is a BO position and many of you will warn me to stay away, but is it truly that bad?

I want to pursue a Boutique/MM IBD position in the future, so exactly which position would give me a better platform? I'm sure the FLDP will be give a better technical skillset but I can't scoff at the Ops position because of the networking opportunities that I will be presented with. Any advice is appreciated!

I would say the FLDP here is a no brainer.

I started in bank ops and had to work my way into a F250 finance area as an Analyst. It is very hard to move around in large banks and once you get a stigma for being in a certain area of the bank it is hard to break out of it, unless you are truly a top 1%. That is just my .02 though.

Good luck with your future!

As you said, the technicals at the FLDP would probably be more applicable/better. Another consideration is how big/important are the names? Is the BB GS/MS/JP? Is Big Pharma Shire/Takeda/Astella or is it Roche/Novartis/Pfizer?

I would also consider the industry of interest; if you like healthcare and would like to stay there then take the pharma offer. If you have no specific interest in this sector and could see yourself pivoting in 1-2 years consider the other option too.

The BB is out of GS/MS and the pharma firm is out of GSK/Amgen/Merck. I do have an interest in Big Pharma, but want to make the move to valuations/banking eventually because I know the work will be more accounting then finance at the FLDP.

I think I will take the FLDP because, as you said, the technicals will be much better and I can self learn financial modeling on my own time since the hours won't be bad at all.

Thank you for your input!
