Target school pretty much only helps as far as getting you to the first interview. Once you're there, its all about knowledge, social skills, etc. I did not attend a target in the UK and many of my classmates and I have gotten BB internships. Target school will definitely help with the first filters though, such as CV screening.

It depends on the extent of the non-target eg. Manchester and Reading are not comparable. Nottingham/Leeds/Manchester may get some interviews but someone at Reading would really struggle.

With the usual suspects (Oxbridge, LSE, UCL), and those like Edinburgh, Bath, Warwick, Exeter, St. Andrews, etc you will have a good chance for first rounds. Otherwise, you really need to differentiate yourself. Not impossible with Reading, but you need a standout CV.

i have seen non-target students attending a BB spring intern in their first year, converting to a summer internship. Seems like a much easier way. but most ppl aren't that career oriented in their first year at uni

Non-target here and landed a BB SA. There is a reason why schools are regarded as “target” or “non-target”. “Target” means banks make effort recruiting from here (events, relationship with the uni, and hence alumni network). You can land first round interview simply by applying via their career portal or resume dropping. Getting the offer or not is up to you (technical, fit,...). Non-target does not offer much support for your recruiting. No relationship, (sometimes) no alumni, no on-campus recruiting. It requires exhaustively more effort to be noticed coming from a non-target comparing to a target when you can just attending info session and resume dropping. You have to network with so many people (mostly strangers) and showing that you are worth of their time. Instead of stressing about the risk of not even getting first round interview, why not get in a target and save tons of traumas and time - which should be otherwise spent on interview prep. If you are really into breaking in this field and still have a chance to decide which uni to get - choose a target.
