BB IT to buy side?

I have always been interested in Investment management. Couldnt break in during UG and am now in an IT role. I am an engineer and I really think the BO/MO is just too unchallenging for me.

I really like doing ER stuff and always enjoy following the markets. Also really like managing my own investments.

What would you propose I do?

MBA? CFA? try networking (i doubt buy side people will give IT people a chance)?

You could somehow make your focus on the IT capability ("horizontal") the platform for a later career focus on the IT vertical, and e.g. transfer into MBB IT teams to "lose" the BO stigma a bit and move to tech-oriented investment groups from there. Seen this a bunch of times in the UK and Germany.
