Best School for Detroit Market

Hello all. I live and work in Nashville as a year 1 financial analyst for the nation’s 3rd largest hospice company. I originally planned to go to Vandy for their MSF then make my way into IBD in NYC or Chicago. After an intensive conversation with my wife, we have decided that it is best to raise our future children (first will be born in 2 months) near family in metro Detroit. I enjoy the Detroit area, but this changes my plan some. I would love to work in IBD there, but I know opportunities aren’t very plentiful in Detroit for IBD. Otherwise, corporate finance for the Big 3 automakers would be my next option.

I have a 3.2 gpa and a 760 gmat. I went to Middle Tennessee State University and majored in Liberal Studies. Which graduate program(s) would be most beneficial into launching me into my desired roles in Detroit?

Part-time while you still work or you plan to move here and become a full-time MBA student paying out of pocket? Most firms and all the Fortune 500 companies have relationships with Wayne State (Detroit proper), Oakland University (Rochester - 30 min north) or MSU (East Lansing - 90 min west). Obviously UMich (Ann Arbor - 40 min west) is the best MBA program but it would be silly to pass up 100% or 50% off after scholarships and/or company reimbursement program for a less prestigious MBA if you plan to stay put in Metro Detroit. My advice is to go wherever is cheapest and try to get a job at a company that'll reimburse you.

I would ideally be in a program while working. I thought about Wayne, Detroit Mercy, or UM-Dearborn. Ross’s Weekend MBA would be great, it just depends on the cost.

We would probably be living in the Downriver area around Wyandotte near my wife’s family.

I have family in Lansing, and wouldn’t mind going to Michigan State full-time, but my wife doesn’t seem too keen on living in Lansing for up to 2 years.

Ross full-time would be great, but cost is a big factor for me to consider full-time. Plus I plan on staying in Metro Detroit for the long term, thus I feel the inherent advantages of going to Ross would be mitigated if there are much cheaper regional programs that could connect me to the region.

That must've been a helluva conversation

I think the best option is the Ross weekend program. Detroit definitely has some boutique IBs as well. If I'm not mistaken, Plante Moran is HQ'ed in Southfield. I believe they have a small investment banking practice you'll likely have to network in to. Maybe the other large accounting firms as well?

For local IB you'll definitely be fine at Ross and Broad...I'm not sure how many banks recruit at Wayne State but I'd be surprised if they didn't get visits from some. Banks I know of:
